About the PDF Splitter

The PDF Splitter takes pages out of a PDF without uploading it anywhere. Split a document into one file per page, cut it into custom ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8-10, or extract a handful of pages into one new PDF. Drop in one file or several; each is split on its own and every output is ready to download, singly or together as a ZIP. Everything runs in your browser, with no signup and no watermark.

How to split a PDF

Steps

  1. Choose a mode. Every page to its own PDF needs no further input. Custom ranges and Extract pages into one PDF show a Pages field.
  2. Type the pages you want, separated by commas, with a dash for a span. 1-3, 5, 8-10 means pages one to three, page five and pages eight to ten. The field tells you straight away if something cannot be read.
  3. Drag your PDF onto the drop area, paste it, or choose files. Splitting starts at once.
  4. Download each part, or press Download all as ZIP when there is more than one output.

The three modes

Every page to its own PDF

A 12-page document becomes twelve one-page files named report-01.pdf to report-12.pdf. This is the quickest way to send one page to someone or to reorder pages by merging them again in a different order.

Custom ranges

Each comma-separated entry becomes its own PDF. 1-3, 5, 8-10 produces three files: pages one to three, page five, and pages eight to ten. A reversed span such as 3-1 is understood as 1-3.

Extract pages into one PDF

All the listed pages are collected into a single new document, in the order you list them. 9, 2 gives a two-page file whose first page is the original page nine. Use it to pull the pages you need out of a long document.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to our servers, and the output files are created on your device. They stay in the tab until you close or reload it, and then they are gone.

What the outputs contain

Pages keep their size, rotation, text, images and fonts exactly. Like every PDF produced on this site, the outputs are cleaned: form fields, scripts, open actions, embedded files, bookmarks and the author, title and date fields are removed, and the producer is set to the site name. Flatten a form in your PDF reader first if you need its filled-in values to remain visible.

Problem files and mistakes

  • A page number larger than the document fails that file with a message naming the page and the page count. Fix the field and press Retry.
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened. Remove the password in your PDF reader and add the file again.
  • Damaged files fail on their own row while other files are still split.
  • Files are limited to 50 MB each, 20 per batch and 200 MB in total.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write the page ranges for a custom split?

Separate entries with commas and use a dash for a span: 1-3, 5, 8-10 means pages one to three, page five and pages eight to ten. Spaces are ignored, and a reversed span such as 3-1 is read as 1-3. Page numbers start at one.

What is the difference between Custom ranges and Extract pages?

Custom ranges produces one PDF per entry, so 1-3, 5 gives you two files. Extract pages collects every listed page into a single new PDF, in the order you listed them, which is the right choice when you want a few pages out of a long document.

How are the output files named?

Outputs take the name of the original file with a number added, for example report-1.pdf, report-2.pdf and so on, in the order they were produced; from ten outputs upwards the numbers are padded, as in report-01.pdf. A split that produces a single file keeps the plain name, report.pdf.

Why does the tool say a page does not exist?

One of the pages you typed is larger than the number of pages in that file. The message names the page and the file's page count. Correct the Pages field and press Retry on the row; the file is not uploaded again because it never left your device.

Can I split a PDF that has a password?

A password-protected PDF cannot be opened by this tool, so its row shows a message explaining that. Open the file in your PDF reader, remove the password, save a copy and split that copy instead.
