About the Image Converter

The Image Converter changes a picture from one format to another: PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP and GIF, in any direction. Pick the format you want, drop in one image or many, and download the result. Everything runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded and your files never leave your device. There is no signup and no limit on how many times you use it.

How to convert an image

Steps

  1. Choose the output format in Convert to.
  2. Adjust quality or background colour if the format offers them.
  3. Drag files onto the drop area, paste them, or choose files. Conversion starts as soon as a file is added.
  4. Download each file, or download all of them as one ZIP when you converted more than one.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your images are never uploaded to our servers, and the converted files are created on your device. Image metadata such as location and camera details is removed from the output. Converted files stay in the tab until you close or reload it, and then they are gone.

Which format should I choose?

  • Photos for the web: WebP or AVIF give small files at good quality. JPEG is the safe choice when you cannot tell where the file will be opened.
  • Transparency: PNG keeps it exactly. WebP and AVIF keep it too and usually make smaller files.
  • Maximum compatibility: JPEG for photos and PNG for graphics open almost everywhere.
  • Older software: BMP is uncompressed and simple, which some legacy programs still expect.
  • Simple graphics: GIF works for flat images with few colours, and PNG is usually the better choice when you do not need GIF.

Options explained

  • Quality (JPEG, WebP, AVIF): a higher number keeps more detail and makes a larger file. The defaults are 85 for JPEG, 80 for WebP and 60 for AVIF. AVIF takes longer to encode, so large images can take several seconds.
  • Lossless (WebP): keeps every pixel, at the cost of larger files. The quality slider is switched off while it is on.
  • Background colour (JPEG and BMP): these formats cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with this colour. White is the default.
  • Convert the first frame only: animated files are rejected unless this is on. When it is on, the first frame becomes a still image and the result is marked as such.

Limits and what to do about them

  • 50 MB per file. The conversion runs inside your browser, and larger files can run out of memory on phones and older laptops. Try a smaller copy of the file.
  • 32 megapixels per image. The browser has to hold the full uncompressed picture in memory. Many phone cameras produce photos larger than this, and those images are refused with a message that shows their size.
  • Animated files are converted only as a still image of the first frame, and never as an animation.
  • Colour profiles are not kept. The converted file carries no ICC profile, so colours in Display P3 or Adobe RGB images may shift slightly.
  • HEIC, TIFF, SVG, ICO and RAW files are not supported yet.
  • Up to 20 files and 200 MB per batch.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded when I convert it?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your images are never sent to our servers and the converted files are created on your device. Closing or reloading the tab discards them.

What is the maximum file size and image size?

Each file can be up to 50 MB and each image up to 32 megapixels. The conversion happens in your browser, and the browser must hold the full uncompressed picture in memory, so larger images can run out of memory on phones and older laptops.

Does converting an image reduce its quality?

It depends on the output format. PNG, BMP and lossless WebP keep every pixel, while JPEG, lossy WebP and AVIF discard some detail to save space, and the quality slider lets you choose how much. Converting a lossy file to PNG does not bring back detail that was already lost.

Why did my transparent image get a white background?

JPEG and BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent areas must be filled with a solid colour. White is the default; use the background colour control to pick black or any other colour before you convert. PNG, WebP, AVIF and GIF output keep transparency.

Can I convert animated GIFs, WebP or PNG files?

Not as animations yet. Animated files are rejected by default, and you can switch on Convert the first frame only to turn the first frame into a still image. The output never contains an animation, even when you choose GIF.

Is the location and camera data in my photo kept?

No. Metadata such as GPS location, camera model and timestamps is not copied into the converted file. The colour profile is also left out, so colours in Display P3 or Adobe RGB images may shift slightly.

Which image formats can I convert between?

You can convert between PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP and GIF in any direction except to the same format. HEIC, TIFF, SVG, ICO and RAW files are not supported, and the tool will tell you when a file is a type it cannot read.
