About WebP to PNG conversion

This page turns WebP images into PNG files in your browser. WebP is common on websites, and people usually need a PNG when a picture they saved will not open in an image editor, a slide deck, a document or a content system that only knows older formats. The converted PNG keeps transparency, so logos and cut-outs keep their clean edges. Your images are never uploaded, and your files never leave your device. There is no signup. PNG is already selected as the output, so drop a WebP file in and the conversion starts.

How to convert WebP to PNG

Steps

  1. Check that PNG is selected under Convert to. It is chosen for you on this page.
  2. Drag your WebP files onto the drop area, paste them, or choose files.
  3. Wait for each file to show as done. Conversion starts as soon as a file is added.
  4. Download each PNG, or download all of them as one ZIP when you converted more than one.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your images are never uploaded to our servers, and the converted files are created on your device. Image metadata such as location and camera details is removed from the output. Converted files stay in the tab until you close or reload it, and then they are gone.

File size after convertingA PNG is usually larger than the WebP it came from, because PNG stores every pixel without loss and WebP is often compressed harder.

What happens to transparency and quality

WebP and PNG both support an alpha channel, so a transparent WebP becomes a transparent PNG with every pixel, including soft edges and shadows, carried across. Nothing is flattened onto a background, which is why this page has no background colour setting.

PNG is lossless, so the conversion itself does not remove detail. It also cannot restore detail that a lossy WebP already threw away. If your WebP was saved at low quality, the PNG will contain the same softness and artefacts, only in a bigger file. The upside of PNG is that you can open, edit and save it again and again without losing any more.

WebP files can also be animated. A PNG from this tool is always a still image, so animated WebP files are rejected unless you switch on Convert the first frame only, which saves the first frame as a single PNG.

Limits and what to do about them

  • 50 MB per file. The conversion runs inside your browser, and larger files can run out of memory on phones and older laptops. Try a smaller copy of the file.
  • 32 megapixels per image. The browser has to hold the full uncompressed picture in memory. Many phone cameras produce photos larger than this, and those images are refused with a message that shows their size.
  • Animated files are converted only as a still image of the first frame, and never as an animation.
  • Colour profiles are not kept. The converted file carries no ICC profile, so colours in Display P3 or Adobe RGB images may shift slightly.
  • HEIC, TIFF, SVG, ICO and RAW files are not supported yet.
  • Up to 20 files and 200 MB per batch.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG stores an alpha channel, so every transparent and semi-transparent pixel in the WebP is carried over unchanged. Nothing is filled with white, and there is no background colour option for PNG output because none is needed.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP I started with?

WebP is usually compressed much harder than PNG, especially when the WebP is lossy. PNG has to store every pixel of the decoded picture without loss, so the file grows. This is normal, and the PNG will not look any better than the WebP did.

Will a lossy WebP look better once it is a PNG?

No. A lossy WebP has already discarded fine detail, and PNG cannot bring it back. What you gain is a file that older editors, office programs and upload forms accept, and that you can edit and save repeatedly without losing more quality.

Can I convert an animated WebP to PNG here?

Animated WebP files are rejected by default, because a PNG made by this tool is always a still image. Switch on Convert the first frame only and you get the first frame of the animation as a single PNG.

Why does my editor say it cannot open WebP files?

WebP is newer than PNG and JPEG, and some desktop editors, office suites and content systems never added support for it. Converting the file to PNG gives you a format those programs have read for decades, with transparency intact.
