About AVIF to JPG conversion

This page turns AVIF images into JPG files in your browser. AVIF is a modern format that makes very small photo files, but it is still new enough that many phones, editors, print shops and upload forms cannot open it. Converting to JPG makes the same picture easy to share, edit and print. Your images are never uploaded, and your files never leave your device. There is no signup. JPG is already selected as the output, so drop an AVIF file in and the conversion starts.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

Steps

  1. Check that JPEG is selected under Convert to. It is chosen for you on this page.
  2. Set the quality if you want something other than the default, and pick a background colour if your image has transparent areas.
  3. Drag your AVIF files onto the drop area, paste them, or choose files. Conversion starts as soon as a file is added.
  4. Download each JPG, or download all of them as one ZIP when you converted more than one.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your images are never uploaded to our servers, and the converted files are created on your device. Image metadata such as location and camera details is removed from the output. Converted files stay in the tab until you close or reload it, and then they are gone.

File size after convertingA JPG is usually larger than the AVIF it came from, because AVIF compresses photos more efficiently at similar visual quality.

What to expect from this conversion

File size. AVIF is one of the most efficient photo formats, so expect the JPG to be bigger. The quality slider starts at 85. Lowering it shrinks the file at the cost of some detail, and raising it keeps more detail in a larger file.

Compatibility. The AVIF is read by code that runs inside this page, so it works even when your device cannot display AVIF itself. The first conversion may take a moment while that code loads.

Colour. JPG output here carries no colour profile. Ordinary sRGB photos look the same, but a wide-gamut AVIF may appear slightly less saturated.

Transparency. AVIF can have transparent areas and JPG cannot, so those pixels are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default. Use the Image Converter and choose PNG if you need to keep the transparency.

Animated AVIF files are rejected unless you switch on Convert the first frame only, which saves the first frame as a still JPG.

Limits and what to do about them

  • 50 MB per file. The conversion runs inside your browser, and larger files can run out of memory on phones and older laptops. Try a smaller copy of the file.
  • 32 megapixels per image. The browser has to hold the full uncompressed picture in memory. Many phone cameras produce photos larger than this, and those images are refused with a message that shows their size.
  • Animated files are converted only as a still image of the first frame, and never as an animation.
  • Colour profiles are not kept. The converted file carries no ICC profile, so colours in Display P3 or Adobe RGB images may shift slightly.
  • HEIC, TIFF, SVG, ICO and RAW files are not supported yet.
  • Up to 20 files and 200 MB per batch.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert AVIF to JPG at all?

AVIF produces very small files, but many phones, photo editors, print services and upload forms still cannot open it. JPG is read by nearly everything, so converting makes the picture easy to share, edit and print without compatibility surprises.

Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?

Usually yes, often by a clear margin, because AVIF compresses photos more efficiently than JPG at similar visual quality. Lower the JPG quality slider to trade some detail for a smaller file, or keep the default of 85 for a safe result.

Can this open AVIF files that my device cannot show?

Yes. The AVIF is decoded by code that runs inside this page rather than by your operating system, so it does not depend on your device having AVIF support. The first AVIF conversion may take a moment while that code loads.

What happens to an AVIF with a transparent background?

JPG has no transparency, so any transparent area is filled with the background colour you choose, white by default. If you need to keep the transparency, convert to PNG on the Image Converter page instead of JPG.

Do colours change when I convert AVIF to JPG?

They can shift slightly. The converted JPG carries no embedded colour profile, so a wide-gamut AVIF may look a little less saturated. Ordinary photos in the standard sRGB colour space convert with no visible difference in colour.
