How many days until Christmas?
This page counts down to Christmas Day, 25 December, from today's date on your own device. The number at the top is always current: it shows the days, the weeks and days, the months and days and the weekdays left, plus a live countdown to the hour, minute and second until midnight on Christmas morning. Children often ask how many "sleeps" are left, so the page shows that too; the number of sleeps is the same as the number of days, because you go to sleep once on each night before the big day.
Once Christmas has passed, the counter rolls over and starts counting to next year's Christmas on 26 December. On Christmas Day itself it shows zero and tells you the day has arrived. How the Christmas countdown works
The rule
Christmas Day is always 25 December. The calculator finds the next 25 December that falls on or after today and subtracts today's date from it, using whole calendar days so that time zones and daylight saving never change the answer.
The live countdown
The ticking clock counts to midnight at the very start of 25 December in your own time zone. That moment is when Christmas begins where you are, so a family in Sydney reaches zero many hours before a family in New York.
The formula
If today is already past 25 December, the next Christmas is in the following year. The weekday on which Christmas falls moves forward by one day each year, and by two days after a 29 February. In 2026 it is a Friday and in 2027 a Saturday.
Ideas for the countdown
- Advent: many Advent calendars start on 1 December, which leaves 24 doors to open before Christmas Day.
- Shopping and post: postal services publish last posting dates in early to mid December; check them against the weekdays count, because parcels are not delivered at weekends.
- School holidays: compare the weekdays left with the end of term to see how many school days remain.
- Christmas Eve: many countries celebrate on the evening of 24 December, which is one day before the count reaches zero.
