About the Days Until Calculator

The Days Until Calculator counts the days between today and any date you choose. Pick a date for a trip, an exam, a deadline or a wedding, choose a holiday such as Christmas, New Year or Easter, or enter your date of birth to count down to your next birthday. The answer appears at once as a number of days, and the page also breaks it down into weeks and days, calendar months and days, and the number of weekdays from Monday to Friday. A live countdown ticks down to the hour, minute and second until midnight at the start of the day you picked.

If the date you enter has already passed, the calculator tells you how many days ago it was instead, so the same page works for "how long since" questions. The count always starts from today on your own device, using your local calendar date, so it is correct wherever you are in the world.

How to count the days until a date

Steps

  1. Choose A date, A holiday or My birthday under Count down to.
  2. Pick the target date, select a holiday from the list, or enter your date of birth.
  3. Read the number of days to go, the weekday the date falls on, and the breakdown in weeks, months and weekdays. The live countdown keeps running while the page is open.

What counts as a day

Today is day zero. Tomorrow is one day away, and a date one week from today is seven days away. The weekday count covers the days after today up to and including the target, leaving out Saturdays and Sundays. It does not remove public holidays; for that, use the Business Days Calculator, which can skip US federal or UK bank holidays.

The formula

Every date is turned into a whole day number, counted from 1 January 1970, so the difference is a simple subtraction:

days until=day number(target)−day number(today)\text{days until} = \text{day number}(\text{target}) - \text{day number}(\text{today})

Weeks and days split that number by seven. Calendar months are counted by moving forward one month at a time from today; when a month is shorter, such as February, a day past its end lands on the last day of that month, and the days left over are added at the end.

Worked examples

  • From Friday 6 November 2026 to Friday 25 December 2026 is 49 days, which is exactly 7 weeks, or 1 month and 19 days. It contains 35 weekdays.
  • From 31 January to 1 March in a common year is 1 month and 1 day, because the month ends on 28 February.
  • A date of 1 November seen on 6 November is shown as 5 days ago.

Common uses

  • Counting down to a holiday, a trip, a concert or a wedding.
  • Planning how many working days are left before a deadline.
  • Checking how long ago something happened, such as a purchase or an appointment.
  • Counting the sleeps until a birthday with children.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded; every calculation runs in your browser and never leaves your device. Your dates, including a date of birth, are not saved or sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does the count include today?

No. Today is day zero, so tomorrow is one day away and the same weekday next week is seven days away. The target date itself is the last day counted.

What happens if I pick a date in the past?

The calculator shows how many days ago that date was, for example 5 days ago, together with the weeks, months and weekdays since then. The live countdown is hidden for past dates.

Which holidays can I count down to?

Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Halloween, Valentine's Day and US Thanksgiving. Each one is worked out from its rule, so Easter and Thanksgiving land on the right date every year, and the count always targets the next one on or after today.

Does the weekday count skip public holidays?

No. It counts Monday to Friday and leaves out only Saturdays and Sundays. To skip US federal holidays, UK bank holidays or your own days off, use the Business Days Calculator.

Why does the live countdown end at midnight?

A date starts at midnight, so the countdown runs to midnight at the start of the target day in your own time zone. The day count and the countdown always agree on when the day arrives.

Does the result depend on my time zone?

The day count uses your device's local date for today, so it matches the calendar where you are. The calculation itself uses whole calendar days, so daylight saving changes never add or remove a day.
