Online Timer and Stopwatch: Countdown, Alarm, Laps
A free online timer and stopwatch in one page. Count down from any time with presets and an alarm, or time laps to the hundredth of a second. Keeps time accurately in a background tab.
Changing the time or picking a preset resets the countdown.
Press the space bar to start or pause when no field is selected. Both timers keep running when you switch modes or tabs.
About the Online Timer and Stopwatch
The Online Timer and Stopwatch puts the two clocks people reach for most on one page. The countdown timer counts down from any time you choose, from one second up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, and sounds an alarm when it reaches zero. The stopwatch counts up to the hundredth of a second and records laps with their lap and split times. Switch between the two with the Mode control at the top; each clock keeps its own time, so a countdown carries on while you time something with the stopwatch.
Use it for cooking, workouts and interval training, study sessions, presentations, board games, exams or anything else that needs a reliable clock in a browser tab. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
How to use the timer
Countdown
- Pick a preset such as 5 min or 25 min, or type hours, minutes and seconds into the three fields.
- Press Start, or press the space bar when no field is selected.
- Press Pause to hold the time and Resume to carry on. Reset returns to the time you set.
- At zero the page shows Time's up, plays three short beeps and announces the alarm to screen readers.
Stopwatch
- Switch the mode to Stopwatch and press Start.
- Press Lap each time a lap ends. The newest lap appears at the top of the table, with the fastest and slowest laps marked.
- Press Pause to stop the clock and Reset to clear the time and the laps. Copy laps copies the table as text that pastes cleanly into a spreadsheet.
Why the timer stays accurate in a background tab
Browsers slow down the timers of pages you are not looking at, sometimes to one tick per second or less. A clock that adds a fixed step on every tick therefore falls behind. This tool never counts ticks. When you press Start it records a timestamp from the browser's monotonic clock, and every time the display updates it works the time out again from that timestamp:
Here is the time you set. Because the result depends only on clock readings, a tab that wakes after ten minutes shows exactly ten minutes less, not the handful of ticks it happened to receive. The tab title also shows the remaining time, so you can glance at it from another tab.
Choosing between the countdown and the stopwatch
- Use the countdown when you know how long something should take: steeping tea, a plank, a 25-minute focus block, a speaking slot.
- Use the stopwatch when you want to find out how long something takes: a run, a lap of a track, a recipe step, a phone call or a puzzle.

Privacy
Nothing is uploaded; every calculation runs in your browser and never leaves your device. The times and laps live only on this page and disappear when you close or reload it.

Frequently asked questions
Does the timer keep running in a background tab?
Yes. The timer records the moment you pressed Start and works the time out from the clock on every update, instead of counting ticks. Browsers slow down background tabs, but the time shown when you come back is exact, and the tab title shows the time left.
Can I run the countdown and the stopwatch at the same time?
Yes. Each clock keeps its own time. Start a countdown, switch the mode to Stopwatch and start that too; switching back and forth never pauses or resets either of them.
What is the longest time I can set?
The countdown accepts up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, and at least 1 second. The stopwatch has no fixed limit and shows hours once it passes 60 minutes.
How do I start and pause with the keyboard?
Press the space bar when no field is selected. It starts or pauses whichever clock is shown. Pressing space while you are typing in a time field does nothing, so you can still edit the numbers.
Will I hear an alarm when the countdown ends?
The page plays three short beeps at zero, shows a Time's up banner and announces it to screen readers. If your device is muted or the browser blocks audio, the banner and the tab title still show that the time is up.
Is anything saved or sent anywhere?
No. The timer runs entirely in your browser. Times and laps are kept only on the page and are cleared when you reload or close it.
