Time Converter

Convert between seconds, minutes, hours, days, and other time units.

About the Time Converter

The Time Converter turns a duration written in one unit into the same duration written in another — minutes to seconds for a timeout value, hours to minutes for a timesheet, days to hours for a schedule. It converts durations, not calendar dates, so a month here is a fixed 30 days and a year is a fixed 365 days. Type a number, pick the two units, and the answer updates as you type.

How to convert minutes to seconds

A minute is 60 seconds, and an hour is 60 minutes. The sexagesimal ladder is inherited from Babylonian astronomy and has not changed since.

seconds=minutes×60minutes=seconds÷60\begin{aligned} \text{seconds} &= \text{minutes} \times 60 \\ \text{minutes} &= \text{seconds} \div 60 \end{aligned}

Worked example. A 45-minute meeting is 45 × 60 = 2,700 seconds. Going the other way, a 5,400-second cache lifetime is 5,400 ÷ 60 = 90 minutes, which is 1.5 hours.

Every unit in seconds

  • 1 minute = 60 s.
  • 1 hour = 3,600 s.
  • 1 day = 86,400 s.
  • 1 week = 604,800 s.
  • 1 month = 2,592,000 s, on this tool's fixed 30-day month.
  • 1 year = 31,536,000 s, on this tool's fixed 365-day year.

How this tool defines a month and a year

Calendar months run from 28 to 31 days and calendar years from 365 to 366, so there is no single correct answer. This converter uses fixed averages — a month is 30 days and a year is 365 days — which keeps every result reproducible and makes the arithmetic match what most project planning and billing systems assume. Use the Date Calculator instead when you need the real number of days between two actual dates, including leap years.

Real-world values

  • A working day of 8 hours is 480 minutes, or 28,800 seconds.
  • A standard 40-hour week is 2,400 minutes.
  • A 90-day notice period is 2,160 hours.
  • A 30-second HTTP timeout is 0.5 minutes.
  • A year on this tool's definition is 8,760 hours, or 525,600 minutes.
  • A leap year adds one day, 86,400 seconds, which this converter does not model.

What is a second?

The second is the SI base unit of time. Since 1967 it has been defined by atomic physics: 9,192,631,770 cycles of the radiation from a caesium-133 atom moving between two particular energy levels. That definition replaced one based on the Earth's rotation, which turned out to be slightly irregular. Every other unit on this page is a multiple of the second.

Units this converter supports

Seven: second, minute, hour, day, week, month and year. Any pair converts in either direction. Units smaller than the second — milliseconds, microseconds, nanoseconds — are not offered.

Frequently asked questions

How does this tool define a month and a year?

A month is 30 days and a year is 365 days. Both are fixed averages, so every result is reproducible. They deliberately ignore calendar months of 28 to 31 days and leap years, so use a date calculator rather than this converter when a real calendar span matters.

How many seconds are in a day?

86,400 seconds: 24 hours of 60 minutes of 60 seconds. An hour is 3,600 seconds, and a week is 604,800 seconds.

How many hours are in a year?

8,760 hours on the 365-day definition this tool uses, and 31,536,000 seconds. A leap year adds another 24 hours, which the converter does not model.

Which units does this converter support?

Seven: second, minute, hour, day, week, month and year. Any pair converts in either direction, so the same tool turns a timeout in seconds into minutes or a contract in months into days. Smaller units than the second are not offered.
