About the Volume Converter
The Volume Converter turns a volume written in one unit into the same volume written in another — litres to gallons for fuel, millilitres to fluid ounces for a bottle, or cups, tablespoons and teaspoons for a recipe. All of the imperial-looking units here are US measures. Type a number, pick the two units, and the answer updates as you type.
How to convert litres to US gallons
One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres. The figure is exact because the US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, and the inch is exactly 2.54 cm.
Worked example. A 50-litre fuel tank holds 50 ÷ 3.785411784 = 13.21 US gallons. Going the other way, a 15-gallon tank holds 15 × 3.785411784 = 56.78 litres.

US gallons are not imperial gallons
This is the trap worth knowing. A US liquid gallon is 3.785412 L, while the imperial gallon still used in the UK is 4.54609 L — about 20 percent larger. The same gap runs through the quart, pint and fluid ounce. This converter offers the US measures only, which is why every label above says US. A UK recipe calling for a pint needs 568 mL, not the 473 mL this tool gives.
What is a litre?
A litre is 1,000 cubic centimetres, which is one thousandth of a cubic metre. It is not an SI base unit — the cubic metre is — but it is accepted for use with SI and is the unit most of the world buys liquids in. One litre of fresh water has a mass very close to one kilogram, which is where the original definition came from.
Units this converter supports
Ten: millilitre, litre, cubic metre, and the US gallon, quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce, tablespoon and teaspoon. Any pair converts in either direction. Imperial gallons, pints and fluid ounces are not offered, and neither are dry measures such as the bushel.
Frequently asked questions
Are the gallons here US or imperial?
US. One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres. The imperial gallon used in the United Kingdom is 4.54609 litres, about 20 percent larger, and it is not offered by this converter. The quart, pint, cup and fluid ounce are US measures too.
How many millilitres are in a cup?
236.5882 mL. That is the US customary cup of 8 US fluid ounces. US nutrition labels use a rounded 240 mL cup and a metric recipe cup is often 250 mL, so check which one a recipe means before scaling it.
How many millilitres are in a tablespoon and a teaspoon?
One US tablespoon is 14.78676 mL and one US teaspoon is 4.928922 mL, so a tablespoon is exactly 3 teaspoons and a cup is exactly 16 tablespoons.
Which units does this converter support?
