About the vCard QR Code Generator
The vCard QR Code Generator turns your contact details into a code that someone can scan to save you in their phone, which is handy for business cards, conference badges, email signatures and shop windows. This page opens the same tool as the QR Code Generator, pre-set to the Contact (vCard) content type. The details you enter and the code you download stay in your browser. They never leave your device, and nothing is uploaded or stored.
How to make a contact code
Steps
- Fill in First name and Last name.
- Add a Phone number and an Email address.
- Optionally add a Company and a Website.
- Check that the preview scans with your own phone, and that the contact offered looks right.
- Press Download SVG for print, Download PNG for a document, or Copy SVG for a web page.
What the code contains
The code holds a vCard 3.0 card, a widely supported plain-text contact format. The generator writes the name (N and FN), the company (ORG), the phone as a mobile number (TEL;TYPE=CELL), the email (EMAIL) and the website (URL). Only the fields you fill in are included. You need at least a name, a phone number or an email address for a code to appear.
What happens on scan
When a phone camera reads the code, it recognises a contact card and offers to add a new contact. The person can review the details, edit them and save. Phone apps differ a little in how they show the offer, but the common contact apps on iPhone and Android handle vCard.
Field rules
The phone may contain digits and a leading +. Spaces, dashes and brackets are removed for you, so +44 (20) 7946-0000 is stored as +442079460000. Use the international form with the country code if people may scan the code from abroad. The email is checked for a basic [email protected] shape, which catches typing slips but does not prove the address exists.
Keep it small
Every extra field adds modules to the code. A code with just a name, a phone and an email is smaller and easier to scan than one with every field filled, particularly on a business card where the code may be only 2 cm (0.8 in) across. If you want people to find more about you, put the website in the card and let the page carry the detail instead of crowding the code.
Printing
Print dark modules on a light background, keep the blank border around the code, and test with two phones before sending a batch to the printer. For a card, keep the code at least about 2 cm (0.8 in) square. The SVG stays sharp at any size, which suits a print shop. The PNG can be converted with the Image Converter or resized with the Image Resizer. To share a network login with visitors as well, see the WiFi QR Code Generator.
Frequently asked questions
Are my contact details uploaded anywhere?
No. The vCard and the code are made in your browser, so your name, phone and email are never sent, logged or stored.
Which fields can a contact QR code include?
First name, Last name, Phone, Email, Company and Website. Only the fields you fill in are added, and you need at least a name, phone or email.
Will a phone import the contact when it scans the code?
The camera apps on current iPhone and Android phones recognise a vCard and offer to add a new contact. The person can review and edit the details before saving.
How can I keep the code small enough to scan on a business card?
Include only the fields you need, such as name, phone and email. Fewer fields mean fewer modules, so the code can be printed small, but keep it at least about 2 cm (0.8 in) square.
What phone number format should I use?
Digits with an optional leading +. Spaces, dashes and brackets are removed automatically. Include the country code if people may be abroad when they scan.
Why is no code shown or the email rejected?
A code needs at least a name, a phone number or an email address. The email must have a basic [email protected] shape, so check for a missing @ or a missing dot in the domain.
