Pressure Converter
Convert between pascals, bars, psi, and other pressure units.
About the Pressure Converter
The Pressure Converter turns a pressure written in one unit into the same pressure written in another — pascals to psi for an engineering spec, bar to psi for tyres and hydraulics, or atmospheres and torr for laboratory work. Type a number, pick the two units, and the answer updates as you type. Nothing is sent to a server.
How to convert pascals to psi
One pound per square inch is 6,894.757 Pa. It is a pound-force spread over a square inch, so the factor comes from the pound-force (4.448222 N) divided by the square inch (0.00064516 m²).
Worked example. A gauge showing 250,000 Pa reads 250,000 ÷ 6,894.757 = 36.26 psi. Going the other way, 32 psi of tyre pressure is 32 × 6,894.757 = 220,632 Pa, or 220.6 kPa.
Pascals to psi conversion table
A pascal is a very small pressure — one newton per square metre — so this table starts at the scale real gauges work in.
| Pascals (Pa) | psi |
|---|---|
| 100 | 0.01450377 |
| 500 | 0.07251887 |
| 1,000 | 0.1450377 |
| 5,000 | 0.7251887 |
| 10,000 | 1.450377 |
| 50,000 | 7.251887 |
| 100,000 | 14.50377 |
| 101,325 | 14.69595 |
| 200,000 | 29.00755 |
| 500,000 | 72.51887 |
| 1,000,000 | 145.0377 |
Other exact pressure factors
- 1 bar = 100,000 Pa exactly, which is 14.50377 psi.
- 1 standard atmosphere = 101,325 Pa exactly, which is 1.01325 bar and 14.69595 psi.
- 1 atmosphere = 760 torr exactly, so 1 torr = 133.3224 Pa.
- 1 psi = 0.06894757 bar.
Real-world values
- Sea-level air pressure: 101,325 Pa, which is 1 atm, 1.01325 bar or 14.696 psi.
- A car tyre at 2.2 bar is 31.9 psi, or 220,000 Pa.
- A road bicycle tyre at 100 psi is 6.895 bar.
- Human systolic blood pressure of 120 mmHg is 120 torr, which is 15,999 Pa.
- A domestic water main at 4 bar delivers 58.0 psi.
- At the bottom of the Mariana Trench the pressure is about 108,600,000 Pa, which is 1,071 atm.
What is a pascal?
The pascal is the SI unit of pressure: one newton of force spread over one square metre. Because that is a tiny pressure in everyday terms — roughly the weight of a sheet of paper on a desk — pascals almost always appear with a prefix. Weather reports use the hectopascal (100 Pa), engineering uses the kilopascal and megapascal, and the bar survives as a convenient 100,000 Pa.
Units this converter supports
Five: pascal (Pa), bar, pound per square inch (psi), atmosphere (atm) and torr. Any pair converts in either direction. Millimetres of mercury are not offered separately, but a torr and a mmHg agree to better than one part in a million, so the torr setting serves for blood pressure and vacuum work.
Frequently asked questions
How many pascals are in one psi?
6,894.757 Pa. A pascal is one newton per square metre, which is a very small pressure, so pascals usually appear with a prefix: 1 psi is 6.894757 kPa.
What is a standard atmosphere?
Exactly 101,325 Pa by definition. The same pressure is 1.01325 bar, 760 torr and 14.69595 psi. It is a fixed reference value, not today's weather, which is why the converter can treat it as exact.
How do bar and psi compare?
One bar is exactly 100,000 Pa, and one bar is 14.50377 psi. A car tyre inflated to 2.2 bar is at 31.9 psi, which is why European and US tyre placards look so different for the same pressure.
Which units does this converter support?
Five: pascal (Pa), bar, pound per square inch (psi), atmosphere (atm) and torr. A torr is one 760th of an atmosphere, which is 133.3224 Pa.
