Convert between hourly rate and salaryAbout the Overtime Pay Calculator
The Overtime Pay Calculator works out what extra hours are worth. Enter your hourly rate, the regular hours you worked and the overtime hours on top, and it shows your overtime pay, your total gross pay for the period and what that adds up to over a month and a year. This page opens with a worked example so you can see how a typical week of 40 regular and 8 overtime hours is paid, then change any number to match your own timesheet.
Overtime is pay for hours beyond a standard workweek, normally at a higher rate. The calculator covers the common arrangements, time and a half, double time and any custom multiplier, and counts only gross pay. It applies no income tax, social security, Medicare or other deductions.
How overtime is usually paid
Time and a half
Time and a half pays 1.5 times your normal hourly rate for each overtime hour. At $20 an hour, one overtime hour pays $30. It is the most common overtime rate, and in the United States the federal Fair Labor Standards Act sets it as the minimum for most non-exempt employees working more than 40 hours in a workweek.
Double time
Double time pays 2 times your rate. It is not required by federal law, but some employers, union agreements and state rules apply it for very long days, seventh consecutive days or public holidays. At $20 an hour, one double-time hour pays $40.
Check your own rules
Rules differ by country, state, industry and contract. Some places count overtime by the day as well as by the week, and some roles are exempt from overtime. Your contract or local labour office has the final say. This calculator takes the multiplier you give it, from 1 to 10.
How to calculate overtime pay
Steps
- Enter your Hourly rate.
- Enter the Regular hours you worked in the pay period and the Overtime hours beyond them.
- Leave the Overtime multiplier at 1.5 for time and a half, or enter 2 for double time or any other value your employer uses.
- Add Double-time hours if part of your overtime is paid at 2 times the rate, and a Bonus or Commission if you receive one.
- Choose the Pay period that your hours belong to. The weekly example uses one week of hours.
Worked examples
Time and a half
You earn $20 an hour and work 40 regular hours and 8 overtime hours in a week. Regular pay is 20 x 40 = $800.00. Overtime pay is 20 x 1.5 x 8 = $240.00. Your gross pay is $1,040.00 for the week, $4,506.67 a month and $54,080.00 a year.
Time and a half plus double time
You earn $18 an hour and in one week work 40 regular hours, 5 hours at time and a half and 2 hours at double time. Regular pay is $720.00, time and a half is 18 x 1.5 x 5 = $135.00 and double time is 18 x 2 x 2 = $72.00. Gross pay is $927.00 for the week and $48,204.00 over a year of 52 such weeks.
Biweekly pay
You earn $15.50 an hour and are paid every two weeks. In one pay period you work 80 regular hours and 12 overtime hours at 1.5 times. Regular pay is $1,240.00 and overtime pay is $279.00, so gross pay is $1,519.00 per pay period, $3,291.17 per month and $39,494.00 per year.
The yearly figures assume you work the same overtime in every pay period, which most people do not. Treat them as a projection, and use the per-period figure for what a given paycheque should show before deductions.
Overtime and your effective rate
Overtime lifts your average hourly rate. In the first example your gross of $1,040.00 over 48 hours is about $21.67 an hour, compared with $20.00 for regular hours alone. To see how much overtime adds as a share of your pay, divide the overtime pay by the gross pay with the Percentage Calculator. To compare the result with a yearly salary offer, use the Hourly to Salary Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate overtime pay?
Multiply your hourly rate by the overtime multiplier and by the number of overtime hours. At 20 an hour with 8 overtime hours at time and a half, overtime pay is 20 x 1.5 x 8 = 240. Add your regular pay to get total gross pay.
What is time and a half?
Time and a half means each overtime hour is paid at 1.5 times your normal hourly rate. If you earn 20 an hour, an overtime hour pays 30. It is the usual overtime rate and the one the calculator uses by default.
What is double time?
Double time pays 2 times your hourly rate. It is not required by US federal law, but some employers, union agreements and state rules use it for long shifts, seventh consecutive days or holidays. Enter those hours in the double-time field.
When does overtime start?
It depends on where you work and what your contract says. Under US federal law, most non-exempt employees must be paid overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states and countries also count hours per day, and some jobs are exempt, so check your own rules.
Can I use a multiplier other than 1.5?
Yes. Change the overtime multiplier to any value from 1 to 10, for example 1.25, 2 or 2.5. The calculator applies it to every overtime hour. Hours you enter as double time are always paid at 2 times the rate.
Does the overtime pay shown include tax?
No. The result is gross pay before income tax, social security, Medicare and other deductions. Overtime is taxed as ordinary income, so the extra take-home amount is lower than the gross figure shown.
Should I enter hours per week or per pay period?
Enter the hours for one pay period and select the matching period. For a weekly example, enter that week's hours and keep Weekly selected. For a biweekly paycheque, enter the hours for both weeks and select Biweekly.
Are my hours and pay sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you enter is uploaded or stored. Your pay rate, hours and bonus stay on your device, and closing the tab clears them.
