Convert between hourly rate and salaryAbout the Gross Pay Calculator
The Gross Pay Calculator shows what you earn before anything is taken out. Enter an hourly rate with regular, overtime and double-time hours, or an annual salary, add any bonus or commission, and pick how often you are paid. The result is your gross pay for one pay period, for an average month and for a full year, with a line-by-line breakdown of where each amount comes from.
Gross pay is the headline figure on a job offer, a contract or a payslip, and it is the starting point for budgeting, comparing offers and checking that a payslip adds up. This tool stops there on purpose: it applies no income tax, social security, Medicare, benefits or other deductions, so the numbers are the same wherever you live.
How to calculate gross pay

- Choose Hourly if you are paid by the hour, or Salary if you have a yearly salary.
- Pick your Pay period: weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly or annual.
- In hourly mode, enter your Hourly rate and the hours you work in one pay period: Regular hours, Overtime hours and Double-time hours. Leave out anything that does not apply. Change the Overtime multiplier if your overtime is not paid at 1.5 times.

- Add a Bonus or Commission if you receive one. Enter these per pay period.
- Read your gross pay per pay period, per month and per year, and the breakdown below them.
Formulas
Hourly pay
Hours are hours in one pay period, and double time is paid at 2 times the rate.
Salary
Month and year
Periods per year are 52 for weekly, 26 for biweekly, 24 for semi-monthly, 12 for monthly and 1 for annual pay.
Because bonus and commission are entered per pay period, they are multiplied up with the rest of the pay. A one-off yearly bonus is better spread over the periods or added to the annual figure by hand.
Worked examples
Hourly with overtime
Maya earns $22.50 an hour and is paid weekly. In one week she works 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours at 1.5 times. Regular pay is 22.50 x 40 = $900.00 and overtime pay is 22.50 x 1.5 x 6 = $202.50. Her gross pay is $1,102.50 per week, $4,777.50 per month and $57,330.00 per year.
Salary with a bonus
Daniel earns $78,000 a year and is paid semi-monthly, 24 times a year. His base pay is 78,000 / 24 = $3,250.00 per pay period. With a $200 bonus in each period his gross is $3,450.00 per period, $6,900.00 per month and $82,800.00 per year.
Cents matter
At $18.333 an hour for 37.5 hours the exact gross is $687.4875, shown as $687.49. The calculator keeps full precision internally and rounds to the cent only for display, so the yearly figure of $35,749.35 is worked out from $687.4875 rather than from the rounded $687.49.
What is and is not included
Gross pay includes your base pay, overtime, double time, bonus and commission. It does not include tax, pension or retirement contributions, health insurance, union dues or any other deduction, and it does not include employer contributions or benefits paid on top. Your take-home pay will be lower than the gross figure shown here.
If you want to compare an hourly rate with a salary, or turn a pay rate into another period, use the Hourly to Salary Calculator. To work out a bonus or a raise as a share of pay, the Percentage Calculator does the arithmetic.
Limits
The total of regular, overtime and double-time hours cannot exceed the hours in the pay period: 168 for a week, 336 for two weeks, 372 for a semi-monthly period, 744 for a month and 8,784 for a year. The overtime multiplier must be between 1 and 10. Rates, hours, salary, bonus and commission cannot be negative.

Frequently asked questions
What is gross pay?
Gross pay is what you earn before anything is deducted: base pay, overtime, bonus and commission. Take-home or net pay is what is left after income tax, social security, Medicare or equivalent contributions, pension, insurance and other deductions.
Does this calculator take tax off?
No. It shows gross pay only and applies no income tax, social security, Medicare, benefits or other deductions. Tax depends on where you live, your filing status and your other income, so your take-home pay will be lower than the figures shown.
How is gross pay calculated for an hourly worker?
Gross pay per period is the rate times regular hours, plus the rate times the overtime multiplier times overtime hours, plus the rate times 2 times double-time hours, plus any bonus and commission. The hours are the hours worked in one pay period.
How is gross pay calculated for a salaried worker?
Divide the annual salary by the number of pay periods in a year: 52 for weekly, 26 for biweekly, 24 for semi-monthly and 12 for monthly pay. Then add any bonus and commission for that period. A salary of 52,000 paid weekly gives 1,000 per period.
How are the monthly and yearly figures worked out?
Gross per year is gross per period times the number of periods in a year. Gross per month is that yearly figure divided by 12. Because bonus and commission are entered per pay period, they are multiplied up like the rest of the pay, so enter a one-off bonus with that in mind.
Why is a biweekly month not exactly twice a weekly month?
A biweekly pay period is two weeks, so there are 26 per year, not 24. Dividing the yearly total by 12 gives an average month, which is why 1,040 paid biweekly shows as 2,253.33 a month. Some calendar months will contain three paychecks, and the average smooths that out.
Why does the calculator limit the hours I can enter?
The total of regular, overtime and double-time hours cannot be more than the hours that exist in the pay period: 168 for a week, 336 for two weeks, 372 for a semi-monthly period, 744 for a month and 8,784 for a year. A larger total is almost certainly a typing error.
Is my pay information stored or sent anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded or saved. When you close the page, the figures are gone.
