About List Statistics

This page analyses a list of items and shows the main figures at once: the number of items, how many are unique, how many are empty, the shortest and longest item, the average item length and the most frequent item with its count. Paste names, tags, keywords, log lines, survey answers or any other list, with one item per line or any separator you choose. The figures appear as tiles and as plain text you can copy or download. The analysis runs in your browser, so your list is never uploaded.

How to analyse a list

Steps

  1. Paste or type the list. Items are split by new lines by default; choose Comma, Semicolon, Tab, Space or Custom for other formats.
  2. Leave Trim spaces around items on to ignore spaces before and after each item, or turn it off when spacing matters.
  3. Read the figures. They update as you edit the list.
  4. Press Copy or Download .txt to keep the figures as text, one per line.

Privacy

The figures are computed by code on this page. Your list is never sent to our servers and is forgotten when you close the tab.

What each figure means

Items, unique and empty

Items is the number of entries between separators, empty ones included, so two separators in a row count as an empty item. Unique items counts distinct values exactly as written, so "Apple" and "apple" are two values. Empty items counts entries that are empty or contain only spaces.

Shortest, longest and average length

Lengths are counted in Unicode code points, so most emoji and accented letters count as one character. The shortest and longest item skip empty entries, which would otherwise always be the shortest; when two items tie, the first one in the list is shown. The average length divides the total number of characters by the number of items, empty ones included, and is rounded to two decimals.

Most frequent item

The most frequent item is the value that occurs most often, shown with its count, for example "red (4)". When several values share the top count, the one that appears first in the list is shown. For a full ranking, switch the operation to Most frequent items, which lists every value with its count and can ignore letter case.

The statistics are implemented in-house in TypeScript, with no third-party library. They follow the usual definitions of count, distinct count, arithmetic mean and mode, with characters counted as Unicode code points.
