About the EAN-13 Barcode Generator

The EAN-13 Barcode Generator draws the 13-digit barcode that appears on retail products worldwide. This page opens the same tool as the Barcode Generator, pre-set to EAN-13, so you can type a number and download the bars straight away. The number and the image are made in your browser. They never leave your device, and nothing is uploaded or stored.

How to make an EAN-13

Steps

  1. Type 12 digits into Value and let the page add the thirteenth, or type all 13 digits to have them checked.
  2. Look for the note "Check digit N is included" and compare the full number with the one you expected.
  3. Set Bar width, Height and Margin, and decide whether to Show the text under the bars.
  4. Press Download SVG for print or Download PNG for a document.

How the check digit works

The last digit of an EAN-13 is a check digit, which lets a scanner reject a misread. Work from the rightmost data digit and give the digits weights of 3, 1, 3, 1 and so on. With SS as the weighted sum:

c=(10−(S mod 10)) mod 10c = (10 - (S \bmod 10)) \bmod 10

For the data 400638133393, the weighted sum is 89, so the check digit is (10−9) mod 10=1(10 - 9) \bmod 10 = 1 and the full number is 4006381333931. If you type 12 digits, the page adds the digit. If you type 13 digits and the last one is wrong, an inline error names the right digit, which is a quick way to find a typing slip in a number you have been given.

Size and layout

An EAN-13 is 95 modules wide, plus the blank margin on either side. A module is the width of the narrowest bar, set by Bar width from 1 to 6 px. Keep the margin clear, because the quiet zone is what lets the scanner find the first bar, and print at 100% scale. At 2 px per module the bars are 190 px wide before the margin, and the note under the preview gives the exact pixel size.

Do you need GS1 numbers

This is the important limit. A barcode image does not register or identify a product. To sell in shops or marketplaces that require barcodes, you need a company prefix licensed from GS1, which gives you numbers that no one else is using. A number you invent can match a real product somewhere else. Numbers made here are suited to tests, to internal stock labels and to cases where you control the numbering yourself.

Related types

UPC-A has the same bars as EAN-13 with a leading 0, and the Barcode Generator also covers EAN-8, for small packages, and ITF-14, for outer cartons. For serial numbers and references with letters, see the Code 128 Barcode Generator.

Printing

Print dark bars on a light background, do not stretch the image, and scan a printed sample before a full run. The SVG stays sharp at any size, and the PNG can be changed with the Image Converter. For a code that opens a web page, use the QR Code Generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is the number I enter uploaded anywhere?

No. The EAN-13 is drawn in your browser, so the number and the image are never sent, logged or stored.

Should I enter 12 or 13 digits?

Either works. With 12 digits the page works out and adds the check digit, and with 13 it verifies the last one. If it is wrong, an inline error names the correct digit.

How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?

Weight the data digits 3, 1, 3, 1 and so on from the rightmost digit, add them up, and take (10 minus the sum mod 10) mod 10. For 400638133393 the sum is 89 and the check digit is 1.

Can I sell products with a barcode made here?

Only if the number is yours. Shops expect numbers from a GS1 company prefix, and a made-up number can collide with a real product. The image itself does not register anything.

Why won't my EAN-13 scan?

Check that the margin is kept, the bars are dark on a light background, the print is at 100 percent scale and the module width is not too small. Then test the printed barcode with a real scanner.

Which file should I download for a label?

Use the SVG for professional printing, as it scales cleanly. The PNG is fine for documents and slides, and the page shows its pixel size.
