What this page does
Enter a duration in minutes and read it back in seconds. The arithmetic is easy; the reason people look it up is that they need a number to paste into something — a timeout setting, a cron expression, a video timestamp, a cache header — and they would rather not make an arithmetic slip in a config file.
The formula
The second is the SI base unit of time, defined since 1967 by the caesium-133 atom: 9,192,631,770 oscillations of the radiation between two of its energy levels. The minute is not an SI unit at all. It survives from Babylonian base-60 counting, which is also why there are 60 minutes in an hour and 360 degrees in a circle.

Durations you set in seconds
Most software configuration asks for seconds, so these are the values worth having to hand.
- 30 s — half a minute, a common HTTP request timeout
- 60 s — one minute
- 300 s — five minutes, the usual session-idle default

A leap second can make a minute 61 seconds long. These were inserted irregularly to keep atomic time aligned with the Earth's slightly uneven rotation. In 2022 it was agreed to stop adding them by 2035, so the practice is ending — but historic timestamps still contain them, which is why some systems refuse to accept a second value of 60.
