About this tool
The URL Encoder / Decoder converts special characters in URLs and text strings into a safe, percent-encoded format — and reverses the process when you need the original string back.
This tool uses JavaScript's built-in URL encoding functions (encodeURI and encodeURIComponent) so the behavior matches standard web platforms. You pick the operation (encode or decode) and the scope (component versus full URL) to control how strictly characters are transformed.
Encode Mode
Convert special characters such as spaces, ampersands, and non-ASCII symbols into percent-encoded sequences like %20 or %26. Useful for building valid query parameters or embedding text inside a URL.
Decode Mode
Reverse an encoded string back to its readable form. Invalid input produces a clear error message rather than a silent failure.
Component Encoding
Select the encodeURIComponent scope to encode every character except letters, digits, and a small set of unreserved symbols. Use this when passing a single piece of data — such as a search term — into a larger URL structure.
Full URL Encoding
Select the encodeURI scope to preserve protocol, host, path segments, and query delimiters while still encoding unsafe characters within each segment. Ideal for encoding an entire URL string without breaking its structure.
A common use case is encoding query parameters for web scraping or API testing — passing search terms with spaces and special characters into a URL without breaking its structure. You can also decode strings retrieved from logs or shared links.
