Tip Calculator: Split the Bill and Tip
Work out the tip and split the bill between any number of people. Pick a tip percentage, tip before or after tax and round each share up, then see the tip, total and amount per person.
Enter the bill to see the tip and each person's share.
About the Tip Calculator
The Tip Calculator works out the tip on a restaurant bill, a taxi fare or any other service and splits the total between everyone at the table. Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage or type your own, and say how many people are paying. The tip, the total with tip, the tip per person and the amount each person pays update as you type.
Money is counted in whole cents and the percentage in hundredths of a percent, so the results never drift by a fraction of a cent the way plain floating point maths can. Half cents round up. Amounts are shown with two decimals and no currency symbol, so the tool works for dollars, euros, pounds or any other currency with cents.
How to use it
Steps
- Type the Bill amount as it appears on the receipt.
- If you want to tip only on the food and service, type the tax included in the bill and tick Tip on the amount before tax.
- Press a preset such as 15%, 18% or 20%, or type any percentage from 0 to 100.
- Set the Number of people sharing the bill, from 1 to 100.
- Tick Round each share up to a whole amount if everyone wants to pay without coins.
Splitting fairly
When the total does not divide evenly in cents, the calculator tells you how many people pay one cent more. The shares then add up to the total exactly, with nothing lost or invented. With rounding on, every share rises to the next whole amount and the extra goes to the tip; the Effective tip shows the real percentage you leave.
The formulas
The tip is a percentage of the tipped amount, which is the bill, or the bill minus tax when you tip before tax:
Each person's share is the total divided by the number of people:
Worked examples
- Simple tip: a 50.00 bill with a 20% tip gives a tip of 10.00 and a total of 60.00.
- Before tax: a 108.00 bill that includes 8.00 tax, tipped at 15% before tax, gives a tip of 15.00 on the 100.00 of food. Tipping on the full bill would give 16.20.
- Uneven split: 100.00 with no tip between 3 people is 33.33 each, and one person pays 33.34.
- Rounded shares: 47.50 with an 18% tip is 56.05. Split between 2 and rounded up, each person pays 29.00, the tip becomes 10.50 and the effective tip is 22.11%.
Tipping customs
Tipping habits vary a lot from country to country and between kinds of service. In the United States a tip of 15 to 20 percent at a sit-down restaurant is common. In many European and Asian countries service is included in the price, and people leave a small round-up or nothing at all. Some restaurants add a service charge to the bill, so check the receipt before adding a tip on top. When in doubt, follow local practice.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 20 percent tip on a 50.00 bill is 50 × 20 ÷ 100 = 10.00, so the total is 60.00. The calculator does this for you and rounds half cents up.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Either is common, and it is a personal choice. Tipping on the pre-tax amount means the tax is not tipped. Enter the tax included in the bill and tick Tip on the amount before tax to tip only on the food and service.
How does the bill split work when it does not divide evenly?
The total is shared in whole cents. If it cannot be divided exactly, some people pay one cent more, and the page says how many, so the shares always add up to the total. For example, 100.00 between 3 people is 33.33, 33.33 and 33.34.
What does rounding each share up do?
It raises every person's share to the next whole amount, so nobody needs coins. The extra money is added to the tip, and the Effective tip figure shows the real percentage you end up leaving.
How much should I tip?
Customs differ by country and by service. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is common at restaurants, while in many other countries service is included or a small round-up is usual. Check local practice and whether a service charge is already on the bill.
Is my bill sent anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or saved. Closing or reloading the page clears the numbers.
