About the strikethrough text generator
This page writes crossed-out text that you can paste almost anywhere: social posts, profile bios, chat messages, comments and plain-text documents that have no formatting buttons. Type or paste your text and the output shows it with a line through every character, ready to copy or download. It is plain Unicode text rather than formatting, so it keeps its strikethrough when pasted. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How it works
Unicode includes combining marks, characters that attach to the character before them instead of taking up their own space. The mark U+0336, COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY, draws a horizontal line through the middle of whatever precedes it. Adding it after every letter turns "hello" into "h̶e̶l̶l̶o̶". Because each mark joins the grapheme in front of it, emoji and accented letters are struck through as whole characters, following the grapheme rules of Unicode Standard Annex #29.
Options
Other lines and marks
Besides the long stroke, you can choose a short stroke (U+0335), a slash through (U+0338), a tilde through (U+0334), an underline (U+0332), a double underline (U+0333), an overline (U+0305) or a double overline (U+033F). Underlined text from U+0332 is a popular way to emphasise a word where bold is unavailable.
Spaces
By default spaces are left unmarked, so each word is struck separately. Turn on Mark spaces too for one unbroken line across the whole phrase. Line breaks are never marked.
Where it displays well
Most modern fonts on phones and computers draw U+0336 neatly, but the exact position of the line depends on the font, and a few older systems show a separate dash after each letter instead. Search engines and screen readers generally treat the marks as separate characters, so struck-through text is harder to find and may be read aloud oddly; use it for emphasis or humour, not for important information. Some platforms also remove combining marks from names.
Undoing a strikethrough
To get the plain text back, open the operation list and choose Remove combining marks, which strips every nonspacing mark and recomposes the text with NFC. For other text changes, use the Text Case Converter for capitals, the Text Editor for longer writing, or Text to Binary to see the bytes each mark adds: every U+0336 takes two bytes in UTF-8.
Open-source credits
- The strikethrough generator is implemented in-house for this site and uses no third-party library.
- The marks are taken from the Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300 to U+036F) of the Unicode Standard, and graphemes are found with
Intl.Segmenterfollowing Unicode Standard Annex #29. - Removing marks uses canonical decomposition and composition as defined in Unicode Standard Annex #15.
