About the Shoe Size Converter
The Shoe Size Converter turns a shoe size from one system into the others for men, women and children. Choose the chart, choose the system you know, type the size, and the converter shows the US, UK, European (EU), Mondopoint and Japanese (JP) sizes together with the foot length they stand for, in centimetres and inches.
Every system is linked through the length of the foot. Sizes are shown to the nearest half size, Mondopoint to the nearest 5 mm and JP to the nearest half centimetre. Brands differ by up to a size from these standard relations, because each maker builds its shoes on its own lasts. Use the result as a starting point and check the brand's own chart when you can. This is a fitting guide, not medical advice.
How the systems are defined
UK and US
UK and US sizes count in barleycorns, an old unit of one third of an inch, so each full size is a third of an inch longer. With the foot length in inches, a UK adult size is 3 × foot length − 23 and a UK child's size is 3 × foot length − 10, which is why children's sizes run from 0 to 13½ before adult size 1 begins. US men's sizes are 3 × foot length − 22, one size above the UK. US women's sizes on the Footwear Industries of America scale are 3 × foot length − 21, two sizes above the UK, and US children's sizes are 3 × foot length − 9¾.
EU
European sizes count in Paris points of two thirds of a centimetre measured along the last, the foot-shaped form a shoe is made on. With the foot length in centimetres, the EU size is 1.5 × foot length + 2, where the 2 points allow for the toe room between the foot and the end of the shoe.
Mondopoint and JP
Mondopoint, defined in ISO 9407, is simply the foot length in millimetres and is used for ski boots and military footwear. Japanese sizes, under JIS S 5037, are the foot length in centimetres. Neither system adds an allowance, so they describe the foot rather than the shoe.

Measuring your foot
Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure from the wall to the mark. Measure both feet in the afternoon, when feet are at their largest, and use the longer one. Enter the length in centimetres as a JP size, or in millimetres as Mondopoint, and the converter gives you the matching sizes in the other systems.
Worked example
A men's UK 9 stands for a foot of (9 + 23) ÷ 3 = 10⅔ inches, or 27.1 cm. That is a US men's 10. On the European scale 1.5 × 27.09 + 2 = 42.6, shown as 42.5. The Mondopoint size is 270 mm and the Japanese size 27.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my brand's chart differ from this converter?
The converter uses the standard relations between the sizing systems, but each brand builds its shoes on its own lasts and rounds sizes in its own way, so charts can differ by up to a size. Use the brand's chart when it has one, and the foot length when you compare brands.
What is the difference between men's and women's US sizes?
On the common Footwear Industries of America scale, a US women's size is one size above the US men's size for the same foot, and two sizes above the UK size. A men's US 8 is roughly a women's US 9.
What is Mondopoint?
Mondopoint, defined in ISO 9407, is the length of the foot in millimetres. It is used for ski boots, climbing shoes and military footwear because it describes the foot directly instead of the shoe. Japanese sizes are the same idea in centimetres.
How do children's sizes work?
UK and US children's sizes run from 0 to 13½ on their own scale, and then start again at adult size 1. Each size is a third of an inch longer than the one before. Children's feet grow quickly, so leave about a thumb's width of room at the toe and measure again every few months.
How do I measure my foot?
Stand on paper with your heel against a wall, mark the end of your longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark. Measure both feet in the afternoon and use the longer one. Enter the length in centimetres as a JP size to see every other system.
