About the sentence case converter

This page converts text to Sentence case in your browser: ordinary writing, with a capital letter at the start of each sentence and lower case everywhere else. It is the quickest way to repair text that arrived in the wrong shape, such as a paragraph typed with caps lock on, a title copied in all capitals, or a block where every word starts with a capital. Paste the text and the cleaned version appears beside it as you type. Line breaks are kept exactly as you typed them, whether they came from Windows, macOS or Linux.

How to convert text to Sentence case

Steps

  1. Type or paste your text into the Input box.
  2. Choose Sentence case under Case. (If you arrived from this page, it is already selected.)
  3. Read the result in Output, then press Copy to copy it.
  4. Fix proper nouns and the pronoun I by hand, as explained below.

Privacy

The conversion runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to our servers, and it is gone when you close or reload the tab.

The rule, step by step

The tool first lowercases the whole text. Then it capitalises the first letter of every line, and the first letter after a full stop, an exclamation mark or a question mark that is followed by a space. A quotation mark, a closing bracket or an opening bracket between the two does not get in the way.

Examples from the tool

  • hELLO world. this is GREAT! really? yes becomes Hello world. This is great! Really? Yes.
  • HELLO and WORLD on two lines become Hello and World, because every line starts a sentence.
  • 1. hello becomes 1. Hello, so numbered lists get a capital after the number.
  • it is 3.5 kg. ok becomes It is 3.5 kg. Ok.

Why decimal numbers are safe

A full stop is only treated as the end of a sentence when a space and then a letter follow it. The point in 3.5 has digits on both sides and no space, so it is left alone and the 5 stays as it is. For the same reason a file name such as report.pdf or an address such as example.com is not split, because no space follows the dot. The full stop after kg in the example above does end a sentence, so ok is capitalised.

What it cannot know

Sentence case here is a pattern, not a grammar check. Because everything is lowercased first, the tool has no way to tell which words should keep a capital.

  • Proper nouns. PARIS IS IN FRANCE becomes Paris is in france. Names of people, places, companies and products need their capitals put back by hand.
  • The word I. A lone I in the middle of a sentence becomes i.
  • Abbreviations. A full stop followed by a space looks like a sentence end, so in e.g. the cat the word after it is capitalised, and Dr. smith and etc. and behave the same way.
  • Acronyms. NASA and UK become Nasa and Uk.
  • Colons. A colon does not start a new sentence, so the text after it stays in lower case.

For a long text, a quick read-through for these cases is usually faster than writing the capitals again from scratch.

Sentence case or Title Case

Sentence case is the style for body text, interface labels, button text and, in many newsrooms and product teams, headlines. Title Case is for formal titles of books, films and articles. If you want every important word capitalised in a heading, the title case converter leaves small words such as of and the in lower case. If you need a different shape altogether, the text case converter has twelve cases.

Frequently asked questions

Will a decimal number like 3.5 be treated as the end of a sentence?

No. A full stop only starts a new sentence when a space and then a letter follow it. The point in 3.5 has digits on both sides, so it is left alone, and so are file names such as report.pdf and web addresses, which have no space after the dot.

How do I fix text that was typed in all capitals?

Paste it and choose Sentence case. The tool lowercases everything, then capitalises the first letter of each line and each sentence. Proper nouns, acronyms and the word I will also be lowercased, so scan the result for names that need their capitals put back.

Why is the word after Dr. or e.g. capitalised?

The tool treats a full stop followed by a space as a possible sentence end and cannot tell an abbreviation from the end of a sentence. Text such as e.g. the cat therefore becomes E.g. The cat, and you should lower the unwanted capital by hand.

Does it capitalise after a colon or a semicolon?

No. Only a full stop, an exclamation mark or a question mark followed by a space starts a new sentence, along with the start of every line. Text after a colon or semicolon stays in lower case, which suits lists and most running prose.

What is the difference between sentence case and title case?

Sentence case capitalises only the first word of a sentence, as in Plan the team trip. Title Case capitalises most words, as in Plan the Team Trip. Sentence case suits body text and interface labels, and Title Case suits formal titles of books and articles.
