About the Number List Tools

The Number List Tools apply one operation to a whole list of numbers at once. Paste numbers separated by new lines, commas, spaces or a separator of your own, pick an operation, and the result appears as you type, with Copy and Download .txt buttons. The page can add or multiply the list, show running totals and running products, round, truncate, increment, decrement, number each item, join the list with a glue, keep only the even or odd integers, filter by a comparison, analyse each integer, rewrite an integer as a sum, and pull numbers out of free text. The arithmetic is exact: integers of any length and decimals with any number of places are held without floating-point error, so 0.1 + 0.2 is 0.3. Up to 100,000 numbers are accepted.

How to use it

Steps

  1. Choose an Operation. Sum is selected to start; each operation also has its own address, such as /add-integers or /round-a-number, that opens the page with it chosen.
  2. Pick how the numbers are separated: new line, comma, space or a custom text such as a semicolon. Blank items and spaces around each number are ignored.
  3. Type or paste the numbers. A note such as "12 numbers read." confirms how many were understood, and an item that is not a number is named with its position.
  4. Adjust the options that appear for the chosen operation, such as the number of decimal places or the comparison value.
  5. Copy the result or download it as a text file. Lists of results are written with the same separator as the input.

Privacy

Every operation runs in code on this page, in your browser. The numbers you paste are never uploaded to our servers, and nothing is kept once you close or reload the tab.

The operations

Totals

Sum adds every number and Product multiplies them. Running total writes the sum of the first one, two, three and more numbers, so 1, 2, 3, 4 becomes 1, 3, 6, 10, and Running product does the same with multiplication. Because a product can grow very quickly, results longer than 100,000 digits are refused with a message rather than freezing the page.

Rounding and truncation

Round to tens or significant digits rounds each number to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and so on, or to a chosen number of significant digits, with halves rounded away from zero: 1250 to the nearest 100 is 1300. Round to decimal places keeps a fixed number of places and offers six rounding modes. Half up rounds halves away from zero, half even (banker's rounding) rounds them to the even neighbour, up and down mean away from and towards zero, and ceiling and floor mean towards positive and negative infinity. Truncate either drops the last k digits of the whole part, so 12345 without its last two digits is 123, or cuts decimals to a number of places towards zero.

Change each number

Increment and Decrement add or subtract a step, which may itself be a decimal or negative. Enumerate puts a position in front of each number, starting from 1 or any other whole number, followed by a text such as ". ". Join writes the whole list on one line with a glue of your choice, which is handy for turning a column of numbers into a comma-separated value list.

Select numbers

Extract numbers from text reads any text, such as a log, an email or a table copied from a web page, and lists the numbers in it. Integers takes every run of digits; every number also keeps decimal points and a minus sign, but only when the sign does not follow a letter or a digit, so a date like 2024-05-01 gives three positive numbers. Even integers and Odd integers keep whole numbers of that parity; a decimal such as 2.5 is neither. Filter by comparison keeps numbers that are greater than, at least, less than, at most, equal to or not equal to a value, lie between two values inclusive, are divisible by a whole number, or are prime.

Integers

Analyse integers writes one line per integer saying whether it is even or odd, prime, a perfect square and a perfect cube, how many digits it has, its digit sum, and whether it is divisible by 3, 5 and 9. Rewrite as a sum splits each whole number into a chosen number of parts that are as equal as possible (10 into 3 parts is 4 + 3 + 3), into random positive parts that you can draw again, or into the powers of two that make up its binary form (13 is 8 + 4 + 1).

Exactness and limits

Each number is stored as a whole-number coefficient and a power of ten, so additions, products and rounding never pick up the tiny errors of binary floating point. Primality is decided by the Miller–Rabin test with the first thirteen prime bases, which is exact for every number below 3.3 × 10^24. Lists are limited to 100,000 numbers and a rewritten sum to 1,000 parts.

This page does not repeat statistics, sorting or minimum and maximum. For the mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum and standard deviation of a list, use the Number List Calculator; to put numbers in ascending or descending order, use the List Sorter. To list primes in a range, open the Prime Number Generator.

Open-source credits

All operations are implemented in-house in TypeScript with native bigint, with no third-party library. Primality uses the deterministic Miller–Rabin test with the bases bounded by Sorenson and Webster (2015), integer square and cube roots use Newton's method, and random parts are drawn with the Web Crypto API and rejection sampling.

Frequently asked questions

Why does 0.1 + 0.2 come out as exactly 0.3 here?

Most calculators and spreadsheets store numbers in binary floating point, where 0.1 has no exact form, so tiny errors appear. This page keeps every number as a whole-number coefficient and a power of ten, so sums, products and rounding of decimals and very long integers stay exact to the last digit.

What is the difference between half up and half even rounding?

Both round to the nearest value and differ only for an exact half. Half up moves a half away from zero, so 2.345 to two places is 2.35. Half even, also called banker's rounding, moves it to the even neighbour, giving 2.34, which avoids an upward bias when many rounded values are added together.

How does extracting numbers from text treat dates and minus signs?

In integer mode every run of digits is taken as a separate positive number. In every-number mode decimals are kept and a minus sign counts only when no letter or digit sits directly before it, so a date such as 2024-05-01 gives 2024, 5 and 1 rather than negative values.

How are random parts chosen when an integer is rewritten as a sum?

The page picks distinct cut points between 1 and n minus 1 using the browser's cryptographic random generator with rejection sampling, then measures the gaps between them. Every part is a positive whole number and the parts always add up to the original integer. Press Split again for a fresh draw.

Where are the average, median, sorting and minimum or maximum?

Those are covered by sibling pages so they are not repeated here. The number list calculator gives the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation of a list, and the list sorter puts numbers in ascending or descending order, numerically or alphabetically.
