Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) and determine your weight category.

About this tool

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify underweight, overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres (kg/m2)(kg/m^2).

Formulas

Metric Units: BMI=weight (kg)height (m)2BMI = \frac{weight \ (kg)}{height \ (m)^2}

US Units: BMI=703×weight (lb)height (in)2BMI = 703 \times \frac{weight \ (lb)}{height \ (in)^2}

BMI Categories

  • Underweight: Below 18.5
  • Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight: 25.0 – 29.9
  • Obesity: 30.0 and above

Important Notice

BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. However, it does not distinguish between fat and muscle. Therefore, highly muscular individuals, such as athletes, may have a high BMI without having excess body fat.
