About grade calculator

How it works

The Grade Calculator converts letter grades to grade points and calculates your Grade Point Average (GPA) using the standard 4.0 scale. It handles both single course calculations and cumulative GPA across multiple terms.

Standard 4.0 Scale

The tool uses the universally accepted US standard 4.0 GPA scale.

  • A+ / A = 4.0
  • A- = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3
  • B = 3.0
  • B- = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3
  • C = 2.0
  • C- = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3
  • D = 1.0
  • F = 0.0

How GPA is Calculated

GPA is calculated as a weighted average. The grade points for each course are multiplied by the course's credit hours. The sum of these weighted points is then divided by the total number of credit hours.

textGPA=fracsum(textGradePointtimestextCredits)sumtextCredits\\text{GPA} = \\frac{\\sum (\\text{Grade Point} \\times \\text{Credits})}{\\sum \\text{Credits}}

For example, if you earned an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course:

textGPA=frac(4.0times3)+(3.0times4)3+4=frac247=3.43\\text{GPA} = \\frac{(4.0 \\times 3) + (3.0 \\times 4)}{3 + 4} = \\frac{24}{7} = 3.43

Use cases

  • High school students — track performance and college readiness
  • College students — monitor academic standing and honors eligibility
  • Parental tracking — understand your child's academic progress
  • Transfer calculations — convert grades between grading systems
  • Admission planning — project GPA needed for target schools

Cumulative vs Term GPA

The calculator supports both:

  • Term GPA — average for a single semester or quarter
  • Cumulative GPA — weighted average across all terms

To calculate cumulative GPA, enter all courses with their credit hours and grade points.
