Grams to Ounces

What this page does

Enter a mass in grams and read it back in ounces. Cooking is the main reason people need this: European recipes weigh ingredients in grams, American recipes measure them in cups and ounces.

The formula

oz=g28.349523125\text{oz} = \frac{\text{g}}{28.349523125}

One avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of a pound, so it is exactly 28.349523125 g. Dividing by that gives roughly 0.035274 ounces per gram.

The practical shortcut runs the other way: an ounce is about 28 g, and a quarter-pound is about 113 g. Working in whole ounces, multiply by 28 and you are within two grams up to half a pound.

Fluid ounces are a different unit

This is the trap in every recipe conversion. A fluid ounce measures volume, not mass, and the two are only numerically close for water.

  • 1 oz (mass) = 28.35 g
  • 1 US fl oz (volume) = 29.57 mL
  • 1 imperial fl oz (volume) = 28.41 mL

So 8 fl oz of water weighs about 237 g, but 8 fl oz of flour weighs about 125 g, because flour is far less dense. A recipe that says "8 oz flour" almost always means 8 ounces of mass, roughly 227 g. If you measure 8 fluid ounces of flour instead you will use about half as much as the recipe wants.

Precious metals use a third unit again: the troy ounce, 31.1035 g, about 10 % heavier than the ounce in your kitchen.
