Rhombus Area Calculator

Calculate the area of a rhombus with half the product of diagonals. Includes the formula, a worked example, and how it differs from a square.

Calculate area of rhombus

Formula

Using diagonals:

textarea=fracd1timesd22\\text{area} = \\\\frac{d_1 \\\\times d_2}{2}

Using base and height:

textarea=btimesh\\text{area} = b \\\\times h

Where d₁ and d₂ are the diagonals, b is the base length, and h is the height.

Worked example

Calculate the area of a rhombus with diagonals 12 cm and 8 cm:

textarea=frac12times82=frac962=48textcm2\\text{area} = \\\\frac{12 \\\\times 8}{2} = \\\\frac{96}{2} = 48 \\\\text{ cm}^2

Result: 48 cm²

How to use

  1. Enter one diagonal length
  2. Enter the other diagonal length
  3. Click "Calculate" to see the area

FAQ

What if I only know one diagonal? You need both diagonals or additional information like an angle or side length.

Is a square a rhombus? Yes, a square is a special rhombus with all angles equal to 90°.

How is this different from a kite? A rhombus has all sides equal; a kite has two pairs of adjacent equal sides.

Can diagonals be equal? Yes, when they're equal the rhombus is a square.
