About the Army Body Fat Calculator

The Army Body Fat Calculator estimates body fat with the US Army one-site abdominal tape formula introduced in 2023, and checks the result against the Army maximum allowable body fat for your age group and sex. Enter your weight, your abdominal circumference at the navel, your age and your sex, in pounds and inches or in kilograms and centimetres. The page shows the estimated body fat percentage, the fat mass and lean mass, the ACE category, the Army maximum for your age, and whether the estimate meets that standard.

This is an estimate, not medical advice, and it is not an official Army assessment. Only a trained tape tester following the Army procedure can record a result for the Army Body Composition Program.

The 2023 one-site tape formula

Army Directive 2023-11 replaced the older multi-site tape test, which used the neck, waist and, for women, the hips, with a single abdominal measurement combined with body weight. Weight is in pounds and the abdominal circumference in inches:

%BFmen=−26.97−0.12×weight+1.99×abdomen%BFwomen=−9.15−0.015×weight+1.27×abdomen\begin{aligned} \%\text{BF}_{\text{men}} &= -26.97 - 0.12 \times \text{weight} + 1.99 \times \text{abdomen} \\ \%\text{BF}_{\text{women}} &= -9.15 - 0.015 \times \text{weight} + 1.27 \times \text{abdomen} \end{aligned}

If you enter metric values, the calculator converts them to pounds and inches before applying the formula, using exactly 0.45359237 kg per pound and 2.54 cm per inch.

How to measure

Steps

  1. Stand relaxed with your arms at your sides and your weight spread evenly on both feet.
  2. Place the tape horizontally around the abdomen at the level of the navel, snug but not compressing the skin.
  3. Read the tape at the end of a normal breath out. Take three readings and use their average.
  4. Enter the average with your weight, age and sex.

Maximum allowable body fat

  • Aged 17 to 20: men 20 %, women 30 %.
  • Aged 21 to 27: men 22 %, women 32 %.
  • Aged 28 to 39: men 24 %, women 34 %.
  • Aged 40 and over: men 26 %, women 36 %.

A result at or below the maximum for your group meets the standard. The 2023 directive also exempts soldiers who score highly on the Army Combat Fitness Test from the tape test; check the current regulation for the exact rule, because Army policy changes from time to time.

Worked example

A 25-year-old man who weighs 180 lb with a 36 in abdomen gets −26.97 − 0.12 × 180 + 1.99 × 36 = 23.07 % body fat. The maximum for men aged 21 to 27 is 22 %, so this estimate is over the maximum. A 30-year-old woman who weighs 140 lb with a 32 in abdomen gets 29.39 %, inside the 34 % maximum for her group.
